Instead of uploading files from your broker, you can connect it: new trades will then come into Strum automatically.
Sync is available on the "Passive Investor" and "Active Investor" plans. The number of connected accounts depends on your plan.
How it works and whether it's safe
Strum connects to your broker through an intermediary service: SnapTrade (recommended) or Plaid. You sign in to your broker in their secure portal. Strum never sees your broker login or password.
Access is read-only: Strum sees your positions and transactions, but it can't buy, sell or withdraw money.
How to connect
- Open your profile (the avatar in the top-right corner) → "Trade import" → "Connect brokerage".
- Choose a portfolio.
- Choose a connection service: SnapTrade or Plaid.
- In the service's portal, find your broker and sign in. The up-to-date list of brokers is in the portal itself.
- Choose the account to import.
- Choose where the sync should start (see below).
What to choose at the start
| Option | When to choose it |
|---|---|
| Build portfolio from scratch / Import available history | You want Strum to load all the history your broker provides. |
| Sync new activity only | You've already entered the past, or will enter it yourself — with a file from your broker or manually. The sync will only pull new trades from the day you connect. |
| Import a specific period (SnapTrade only) | You only need history for certain dates. |
If you chose "new activity only", the sync doesn't load trades from before the day you connected. Add them with a file from your broker (see the articles in the "Broker imports" section) or enter them manually. Strum removes duplicates between the file and the sync on its own.
How much history your broker provides
Through Plaid, most brokers provide only 1–2 years of history. If you've been investing longer, add older trades with a file from your broker. For IBKR, Strum removes duplicates between the file and the sync on its own.
What gets imported
| Operation at the broker | What Strum creates |
|---|---|
| Buy, sell | Buys and sells |
| Dividend reinvestment | A buy |
| Dividends | Dividends |
| Deposit, withdrawal | Deposits and withdrawals of funds |
| Interest | Interest |
| Taxes, including those withheld from dividends | Tax |
| Commissions and fees | Fees |
| Transfers of securities between accounts and brokers | Incoming or outgoing assets |
| Stock dividends (SnapTrade) | Incoming shares |
Not imported: options. The sync doesn't bring over splits — Strum accounts for them on its own.
If Strum couldn't match a security to an asset or the operation type isn't supported, the transaction will be skipped (see below).
Holdings comparison
After a sync, Strum compares the positions in Strum with the positions your broker shows. If they don't match, you'll see "Mismatch detected". The usual cause is trades missing from the history or corporate actions (a split, a merger).
What you can do:
- Add the missing trades with a file from your broker.
- Add adjustment entries — Strum brings the asset quantities and cash in line with your broker's data. Before you confirm, Strum shows exactly what will change. Note: positions your broker doesn't show will be closed.
- Turn off the comparison if this portfolio has assets that aren't from this broker. To do that, click "This portfolio also holds assets outside this broker — stop checking" (Plaid) or "Stop comparing broker holdings" (SnapTrade). Your transactions and balances won't change.
Skipped transactions
If Strum couldn't match a security to an asset or the operation type isn't supported yet, the transaction will be skipped. Skipped transactions are saved. Link the asset, and Strum will process them again without a new sync.
The connection stopped
- "Reconnect required" — the broker revoked access, for example after a password change. Disconnect the account from the portfolio and connect it again.
- Connection limit — if your plan doesn't allow that many connected accounts, upgrade to a higher plan or disconnect another account.
Disconnecting a broker
In the connection settings, click "Disconnect account" (Plaid) or "Disconnect from portfolio" (SnapTrade). Transactions that were already imported stay in the portfolio, and new syncs stop.
